Dear readers,

I would like to take this message to call on all of our members to support our association this April at our 2023 Construction Awards Gala.

Your support will help our association operate effectively to advocate on behalf of all of New York City’s union subcontractors as well as organize networking and educational opportunities.  In 2023, STA lobbied on behalf of its members for Material Price Escalation relief. The bill passed by both houses of the state legislature and while it was ultimately vetoed by the governor, we are pursuing this issue in 2023. We held many direct committee meetings with public agencies, and we have upcoming plans for our “Meet the CM/GC Purchasing Agents” on June 1, 2023, as well as other collaborative events.  The money raised from the awards dinner goes directly to funding these types of programs for our members.

Beyond being a fundraiser, however, this night brings together professionals from all aspects of the building process into one room to celebrate and strengthen union construction. In an ever-evolving New York City industry, the unity of owners, general contractors, construction managers, subcontractors and labor leaders is vital to maintaining our market share.  Post COVID, the significance of a room filled with 500 of passionate industry professionals will never be lost on me, and I urge all of our members to attend this important and exciting STA event.

Honorees for the Awards Dinner include the following outstanding group of construction industry leaders:

  • Public Official of the Year: Rick Cotton, Executive Director, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey
  • Builder of the Year: Turner Construction, Brouck Amerga, Vice President, Regional Procurement Manager and Elin Thorsteinsdottir, Procurement Manager, Interiors
  • Silver Shovel of the Year: Helena Williams, Project Executive & CEO, JFK Millennial Partners
  • Subcontractor of the Year: Aric Domozick, President, PAL Environmental Services
  • Labor Leader of the Year: Eric Meslin, President & Business Manager, Sheet Metal Workers Local 28
  • Lifetime Achievement Award: Lewis Rapaport, Chairman & CEO, Component Assembly Systems, Inc.
  • Design Professional of the Year: Mitchell Simpler, Managing Partner Emeritus, Jaros, Baum & Bolles Consulting Engineers
  • Special Industry Service Award: Henry Kita, Executive Director Emeritus, Subcontractors Trade Association

If you cannot attend the event, I ask that you consider taking a journal advertisement. All of the information for the construction awards gala can be found on our event website here, or you can email Samantha Sweeney-Annarumma at, and she can help you register and support.

I hope to see many of you on April 12!

Thank you,
Anthony Acerra
