Yes. Joseph Selden, a long-time employee of Mayer Malbin, purchased the company in 1950 a year after Mayer Malbin’s death. Since then, three generations of Seldens and Gordons have followed. First into the family business after Joseph was Bob Gordon, Joseph’s son-in-law. Then came Irwin Selden, Joseph's son. The third generation followed with two of Bob’s sons, Dan and Jon Gordon, and with Irwin’s son and son-in-law, Marc Selden and Edmond Jalbert. Now the 4 th generation – Sam Gordon, Jason Gordon, and Alexander Selden — are transitioning into leadership positions. - What type of subcontractor are you?
Supplyhouse - What have been some of the firm’s major accomplishments; major projects?
Surviving and thriving as a business for 130 years is a major accomplishment that has been achieved by being receptive to the needs of our customers and adapting to the times. At the beginning, Mayer Malbin was a plumbing supplyhouse, selling toilets, bathtubs, and the like. Then in the 1950’s it dropped all of its fixtures and shifted focus towards selling the industrials in the area, which at the time were Grumman, Pepsi, National Sugar, Schaefer Brewing Co., Bulova, Squibb, and others. Two decades later it was time to shift gears again as all the industrials moved away. The focus shifted towards selling mechanical contractors, which remains the company’s primary focus today. - Where does Your firm operate-just NY or other areas?
We are a one-location supplyhouse located in Woodside, NY, but service the entire tri-state area. - What have been some of the unique traits of the firm?
We pride ourselves on our inventory, experience, and service. Contractors can rely on Mayer Malbin as their one-stop-shop for everything needed to get the job done. Our entire inventory is located in one location — a
brand new warehouse in Woodside, NY – so contractors never have to wait for a transfer from a distribution center to get what they need. The owners and employees of Mayer Malbin have dedicated their lives to
knowing the mechanical, plumbing, heating, sprinkler & waterworks trades. The owners of Mayer Malbin are the inside sales team, so when customers call with an order, they will be talking to someone with decades of experience who will know how to get them exactly what they need. Our outside salespeople have been working in the industry for just as long, and their unique backgrounds,
experiences & expertise will ensure that customers get the best service possible. Above all else, Mayer Malbin is dedicated to customer service. We have an
experienced, dedicated, and knowledgeable sales team that will work closely with contractors to get them exactly what they need, when they need it. If a
contractor needs something right away, they can pick up their order the same day they placed it at our warehouse/pick-up counter. With our fleet of teamster-
driven trucks, we can also make same or next-day deliveries to shops and job sites. - How has your firm been involved in the construction industry? (Associations, etc.)
We are a member of the Mechanical Contractors Association, American Supply Association, Affiliated Distributors, and Master Plumbers Council of the City of New York - What are some challenges the firm has overcome?
We recently had to move our inventory and operations from Long Island City, which had been our home since 1932, to Woodside. Moving 30,000 different product SKUs, a pipe fabrication shop, and our office was not easy! - What does the firm think its legacy has been for the NY construction industry?
Providing the best service, inventory, and dependability to the trades for over 130 years. - Why did you join the Subcontractors Trade Association?
